⊹⋆。⋆ Trip to Manila - some Tagalog ⋆。⋆⊹

Posted on 2/19/2025

I’m writing on the plane! Loved that I had set up the workflow so I can write/sync/publish from all my devices.

I always try to learn a couple of words when visiting a foreign country. And I usually do that on the plane since I can’t do much without the internet.

I’m listening to the podcast Go Filipino.

A common way locals greet people is to ask where they’re coming from, going to. You don’t really have to answer something serious.

Saan ka galing? 彡 ★

  • saan - Where
  • ka - you
  • galing - the place where you are from

Galing ako sa bahai.

  • ako - I
  • sa - object marker
  • bahai - house

Saan ka pupunta?

  • pupunta - the place where you are going to

Diyan lang.

Diy sounds like the letter J.

  • diyan - there
  • lang - just

I’m just going over there.

Magandang umaga.

Good morning.

  • Magandang - feels like selamat in Indonesian
  • Umaga - day

Magandang umaga rin.

Add ren for replying. Like “you too.”

Magandang umaga rin sa yo.

Adding sa yo means “to y

Magandang tanghali.

When the sun is at peak. 12:00-1:00pm

  • Magandang tanghali rin.
  • Magandang tanghali rin sa yo.

Magandang hapon.

Afternoon. 1:00-6:00pm

  • Magandang hapon din.
  • Magandang hapon din sa yo.

Magandang gabi.

Good evening.

  • Magandang gabi rin.
  • Magandang gabi rin sa yo.

Sige.

Ok

Paalam.

Good bye.

Babay.

Saan ang papuntang + place?

  • ang - marks the focus of the sentence
  • papuntang - the way to

It’s fine to say the place in English.

The most important one I guess is:

  • Saan ang papuntang C.R.? (Comfort Room) - Where is the restroom?
  • Shorter version is: Saan ang C.R.?
  • By the way I can still use baño, it’s spelled banyo, so it’s Saan ang banjo?

In the podcast, it mentioned that this will be taught later: Ikaw, ka, yo all means “you.” I am not sure if I’ll have the time to get to that point this time.

Finally, I keep forgetting how to pronounce the sentences but don’t want to try to locate it in the podcast, so I found this site that had the simple phrases along with the pronunciation which is super helpful: 10 Basic Filipino Phrases You Need to Learn Before Traveling to the Philippines
